Melbourne Fringe Festival 2016

September is upon us, and that means that The Melbourne Fringe Festival is about to explode through venues across our city.

As Exclusive Accommodation Partner of the MFF 2016, we were lucky enough to chat to the Creative Director and CEO of the Melbourne Fringe, Simon Abrahams, to get some insight into this year’s event.

The Melbourne Fringe has been run annually for the past 33 years, what do you think makes the festival so successful?

Melbourne Fringe is so well loved and our list of artist alumni is pretty damn impressive. Everyone comes through a Fringe at some point in their careers. So I think Fringe has a special place in many people’s hearts. As an audience member there is literally something for everybody with work across every imaginable art form, and with so much of it being outside the usual boxes, audiences have a constantly surprising time too.

The program for the Melbourne Fringe Festival 2016 looks amazing!

Who are some of the must see artists in your opinion?

Thank you! This is a big question. Everyone must see either the opening or closing events by Robin Fox, Sky Light and White Beam. They will be quite spectacular.  I’m also excited about Holly Durant’s Flesh Fanatics, Little Ones Theatre’s Immaculate, Wondercore Island’s Uncomfortable Science and Yana Alana’s Rainbow Cactus.  But mostly you need to see an artist you’ve never heard of. Alongside choosing one of our big names, you should definitely make sure you make room in your schedule for a new discovery. That’s half the fun.

I have heard there are a number of competitions and awards, are there any you can tell us about that we need to look out for?

We’re very excited about our Take 5 at 5 promotion. Every day of the Festival, punters can get $5 off selected events when they rock up to the Bank Australia Ticket Booth at City Square at 5pm. It’s a great way to discover some artists and events you wouldn’t have otherwise seen, and of course it’s a great way to save a few dollars. What’s best is that Bank Australia covers the $5 so the artist still gets the full ticket price.

Many of our artists are also offering a Cheap Tuesday price so you can always snag a bargain early in the week. The great thing about Fringe is that our average ticket price is $20, so you don’t have to do too much bargain hunting.

We of course have our Awards Program. Thanks to Tyrian, many of our interstate and overseas judges get to enjoy a bit of luxury during their stay here in Melbourne. We actually have 140 judges out there every day and night seeing events and trying to find the best of the best at the Festival. We also have our People’s Choice Award so audiences can cast their vote too.

What is the best way for people to find out what’s on, the locations and who is having special door prices?

The best way to keep up to date is of course by signing up to our eNews at www.melbournefringe.com.au/subscribe. We’ll be sending out daily eNews throughout the Festival loaded with great giveaways, specials and Festival news. You can also follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and if you’re feeling like a friendly face you can head to our Bank Australia Ticket Booth at City Square to chat with our friendly Box Office staff.

What sort of opportunities are there for people who looking to get involved in the Melbourne Fringe, are we still able to volunteer?

We are always looking for more hands on deck. Volunteering is a great way to get involved in the Festival and you can email volunteers@melbournefringe.com.au to find out more. The best way, of course, is to get knee-deep in the Festival. Visit our Fortune Teller at City Square or play online to find out the events you’re destined to see at the Festival, check out a Spotlight Stage at Fed Square for a stellar line up of this year’s acts, or head down to our Club to catch a free event every night and soak up the Festival buzz.
